Book Giveaway - Week 4

We're now into Week 4 of the Chatterbox Quilts book giveaway. Congratulations again to Maureen who won "Pinwheel Party - 12 Fun and Unique Quilts" by Ellen Pahl this past Saturday. I'm thrilled to be able to personally deliver this book to her as she lives close by me in Calgary.

From the comments I received, it appears that many people like the idea of purchasing  both paper and PDF patterns for various reasons. I must admit that I have both kinds, but I like the instant gratification that I receive when I purchase a PDF pattern or e-pattern over the web. I guess I'm just an "I want it now" kind of girl!

This week I will be offering a third book that has been donated by Martingale & Company. Thanks again to Martingale & Company for generously offering this book to me for these giveaways.

If you didn't participate in the previous week's draw, here are the details:

One book will be given away each week for the next five weeks; entries will begin on Monday each week. Entries will close at 11:59 p.m. each Friday. I will be drawing a winner for one book each week on Saturday, starting on November 20, 2010. You will need to enter each week to be eligible for that week's book draw. The entry conditions will vary each week, so be sure to read the details carefully before entering.

You will receive one entry for this week's draw for each of the following that you do:

1.  Become a follower on my Chatterbox Quilts Chitchat
blog - and advise me by leaving a comment on this post. Please sign up for posts by email on the right-hand side of the blog, not Google reader, to be eligible. (If you are already a subscriber, just advise me of this.)

2.  Sign up for my Quilt Chatter newsletter by clicking on the top right-hand side of this blog and advise me by commenting on this post.
(If you are already a subscriber, just advise me of this).

3.  Tell me, by leaving a comment below, what you expect in a purchased pattern ie. complete step-by-step instructions or instructions where a general knowledge of quilting is already assumed; full-size templates or ones that you will re-size yourself, issues like this.

4.  Tell me, by leaving a comment below, about your favourite holiday tradition.

You'll receive one entry for every one of the above things that you do - so that's a possible four entries.

You will need to do each of these separately - do not include all your information in one comment or that will only count as one entry. Be sure to comment on this post only so that you will be eligible for the draw. Also, make sure that I have a way to contact you; that your settings are not set to "no reply". I'd hate for you to be the winner, but not able to give the book to you as I can't contact you.

This contest is open to residents of Canada and the continental United States only; sorry no international entries.

This week I am offering "Country Threads Goes to Charm School" by Mary Etherington and Connie Tesene. I reviewed this book in a previous blog post and was amazed at all the little projects that can be made from a charm pack. Since we're running out of time to make Christmas presents, the little projects in this book will allow you to whip up those last few. Use Christmas or holiday fabrics for any of these projects and you'll soon be done all your holiday creating. Break Your Bread, Don't Cut It or Wipe Your Feet would be especially suitable.

Please feel free to tell your friends about this opportunity so they'll have a chance to win a book as well. Don't forget to check back on December 11 to see if you've won this charming (sorry, couldn't resist!) book.

As a newbie, I need detailed instructions. If a general knowledge of quilting was assumed in a pattern, I'd be left scratching my head. I can figure out how to resize templates, tho. :o)

In purchased patterns, I want full size patterns...I may not have access to resizing equipment. I don't mind patterns which are written for those with past experience therefore making them less redundant. I like clear diagrams for directions that might be confusing or hard to explain.

We decorate Christmas cookies every year using a special recipe. Mom started this in the 60's, so it has stood the the test of time and passed the generation gap as well.

In quilt patterns I think it's fine to expect a general knowledge of sewing and piecing, recommending a beginner's book or web site would be nice for those who aren't proactive. I expect clear instructions. Sometimes people word things like they're talking instead of teaching. What is extra nice is when patterns are in paper, full-size, and instructions come with pictures, or there is a download for pictures. I realize that this costs more to make so it's just a personal like.

My favorite thing to do is cuddle up on the couch and watch holiday movies after we've just put lights on the tree and nothing else yet.

As I newbie, I'm fond of any additional quilting tips or instructions a pattern may have. If it's more advanced, maybe quilt veterans could skip to a "fast forward" page, for those who care to skip over the info that new beginners like me need. Or, on the other end of the spectrum, maybe the pattern could have a website mentioned where the author's tutorial on the pattern is located, with a password the quilter uses from the purchased pattern .

As a new quilter I like patterns to have lots of good detail about tecnique, I really like patterns that tell me "x FQs will make this into a y size quilt" because I'm not good at math and measurements, and I need close-up pics of the actual sewing of complicated bits (or placement of fabrics). I also like a bigger font because when I'm in the middle of the project and focusing, it's easier to not have to squint at the pattern, too!

Favourite Christmas Tradition: Family Christmas gatherings... I love that no matter what I know that I will see my cousins and their children and we will all cram into one house for one afternoon to celebrate Christmas!

I love patterns that have everything ready for me. When I open the package I just want to get started. Picutre are a must. I would like to think I know a lot but I don't. LOL!

Holiday Traditions: one thing we always do is take a picture of the kids infront of the tree. I write on a piece of paper the year and place it in the tree so we can know what year it is. It was something that my dad did when I was a kid and now I do it. But not for much longer. My kids are 18, 16, and 14. Thank you for the give away. I love all of these books.

I can be impatient so I like Full-sized patterns,
Step by Step Instructions (even if I don't take the time to read them all first.. ha!) and Pictures (or diagrams), especially if there are some steps that may be confusing.

My favorite Holiday tradition is to break out a new jigsaw puzzle and work on it together with our extended families. Sometimes we listen to Christmas movies while we work. It's a relaxing and we enjoy some LONG conversations. :D

I do like full size templates unless they are really large, then I would resize them myself. I usually don't want the basic quiltmaking instructions unless it is a technique that I am new to. But I can see where it would come in handy for someone new to quilting.

One of our favorite traditions is to go into some of the neighborhoods that put out the candles lining the streets after our church service. It is very uplifting.

favorite tradition... we do what Little Bear does. We celebrate the Winter Solstice! We have a big dinner, open gifts, stay up late. It's the longest night of the year. The next morning I pack up the kids and we drive out to a good spot to watch the sunrise. (late- nearly 9 am). We sing songs and eat breakfast in the van while we celebrate the fact that daylight will grow longer from that day on. : ) BET YOU NEVER HEARD THAT ONE BEFORE! lol i'm different

What I expect in a pattern. Clear directions for making the item. If a level of prior knowledge is required that should be clearly stated on the outside package, purchase page so that a person doesn't buy the pattern thinking they can learn it all inside. I prefer full size templates because I don't have easy access to a method of enlarging, but I realize that isn't always realistic.

Janet said...

My favourite holiday tradition is the stockings. It is peaceful and dark. The tree is lit. Everyone murmurs quietly. People drift in when they are ready to get up but no one wants to miss the whole thing. There are all kinds of little goodies to savour and enjoy. The best tradition for Christmas.

A new tradition we started is to draw names for Christmas gifts - 1 per person. We then meet around Christmas to exchange gifts and mainly to have a low key family day - all 4 generations eating dinner and visiting. It is fun and relaxing. Removing shopping for our side of the family really reduces stress.

I prefer paper patterns that have full sized templates if needed, clean clearly spaced type, and professional appearance to the photos and diagrams. All the requirements should be clearly listed as well as any tips if there is tricky piecing. Also, describing the fabrics used in the cover shot helps.

My expectations in a pattern, that I buy, or from a designer that I become loyal too, is probably different than a beginner or experienced quilter.

I'm perfectly happy to have general instructions. To help reduce costs (which I think help increase sales) I also am inclined to think that the basic instructions (w/o revealing the design) can be on a web and the pattern can share link info to these instructions. E.G. keep the costs down by having minimal basic instructions in the printed design/pdf design.
